YMCA of Elkhart County

History of our Y

1882




The YMCA of Elkhart County was founded by a group of local citizens as a meeting club

1884




The YMCA of Elkhart County united with the New York Central Railroad

1885




A building was erected on Tyler Street for both the YMCA and the Railroad

1929




Fundraising began and a new facility was built on Franklin Street for both the Y and the Railroad, Y professional staff were hired and programs began

1958




The Railroad moved to its own location

1965




A committee organized to study the program and facility needs of both the YMCA of Elkhart County and YWCA Elkhart County

1967




Steering committee appointed to work out joint plans; approved by YMCA and YWCA

1969




"Thrust 70" Capital Campaign to raise $3.2 million for the current facility on East Jackson Boulevard

1973




YMCA and YWCA began programs and memberships at 200 East Jackson Boulevard in the new facility

1993




Capital Campaign funds raised to renovate YMCA/YWCA facility

2004




YWCA relocates their operation and the facility becomes solely the YMCA of Elkhart County
