Saturday morning was the first day of games for our indoor soccer season. The teams of 4 and 5 year olds played early. The older 6-8 year olds played later. There was high energy, lots of excitement, many fans, great encouragement and fun first start. One would expect the players to gain ball skills and game strategy, teamwork and sportsmanship. But what we saw happen was a memorable surprise.
With the many opportunities the Y offers for girls, like dance and gymnastics, our youth team sports have fewer girls than boys. The red team is one of those teams with a bunch a boys and a few girls. The first rotation of players for the red team was almost all boys playing. When the coach substituted in his next few players, 2 little girls came in together holding hands. Like best friends taking a stroll down the lane, these two skipped and ran together holding hands. At one point in the game, one was asked to take a penalty kick. The coach had to ask the girls to drop hands in order for her to take the kick. No worries! As soon as she was finished, they were right back together again.
What an added benefit to playing indoor soccer for these girls. A new friend! Another quote comes to mind because of this special memory: A friend is someone who reaches for your hand... but touches your heart.
