YMCA of Elkhart County

For Youth Development
For Healthy Living
For Social Development

Welcome to the

YMCA of Elkhart County

The YMCA of Elkhart County strengthens the foundations of our community through well-being and fitness, camps, family time, swim, sports and play, and other activities for people of all ages, incomes and abilities. We’re more than just a place to work out. At the Y, we help build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all with the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at the heart of everything we do.

With a commitment to nurturing youth development, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive.

NEWS FROM THE Y
Serving over 19,000 individuals per year takes a lot of help and cooperation. The YMCA of Elkhart County takes great pride in our staff, members and volunteers. Each came to the Y for a different purpose, but all our tied together by the same cause: Strengthening our Community. Whether it's through performing job duties as a staff, improving health by working out as a member, or serving as a volunteer in one of our departments, each person that comes to the Y matters to us!

Last year, the staff re-instated the employee recognition program and added a few new twists. It's now called the "Employee Above and Beyond Program". We wanted our program to be more than an 'employee of the month' award. We wanted to focus on the positive character aspects of our employees, beyond just their ability to perform their job. As we were creating the program, we realized we have some incredible members and volunteers who should be recognized as well. Each month, the staff nominates a fellow co-worker, member or volunteer that has exhibited exceptional caring, responsibility or respect to other staff, members or volunteers. Three plaques hang in the Welcome Center of the Y with the picture of each month's nominees.

In addition to the plaques, we will start posting a monthly blog about the nominees. If you know any of the nominees, give them a high five and let them know they really do make a difference!

Garry Johnson

EMPLOYEE ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARD WINNER
JANUARY 2012

Garry has been part of our building monitor staff for almost a year. He is a team player who is always willing to lend a hand. If he sees a staff carrying something, he offeres to help, a door needs opening and he is there, a new member needs a tour, he is willing. We truly appreciate his positive, friendly, helpful manner. Thanks Garry!

Jennifer Velazquez

MEMBER ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARD WINNER
JANUARY 2012

Even though Jennifer and her family are relatively new members at the Y, she recognized a need right away and set out to help. Jennifer pointed out to our Welcome Center staff that she speaks Spanish and would be willing to translate for our Spanish speaking patrons whenever she is here. She has even referred friends and brought them to the Y and translated for them while they register for membership or programs.

Jennifer has truly gone above and beyond to help our staff at the Welcome Center, and we are grateful.

Diane Fenner

VOLUNTEER ABOVE AND BEYOND AWARD WINNER
JANUARY 2012

If you have been around the Y for any length of time, you may recognize Diane. She is our former Aquatics Director. Although Diane and her husband live out of town and she works a full-time job, she still makes time to volunteer for the Y. Technology and the internet allow Diane to do many 'behind the scenes' tasks for us that help lighten the load for those of us in the building day to day. Whether it be updating our database, creating a flier, answering an Excel question (she is an Excel whiz), Diane is always willing to help. We appreciate her eye for detail and her dedication to the Y!

The Y is committed to providing programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We make every effort to ensure that no one is turned away due to inability to pay.
