Our Health and Wellness Department offers a variety of opportunities for our Y members. Consisting of 4 main areas, it's conveniently located on the first floor of the Y. The weight room is located right through the main entrance, you can't miss it. Take a left and you'll quickly find our cardio and group exercise. Walk straight back and you'll visit our cycling studio. The main areas are open whenever the Y is open and we have classes scheduled through-out the day for your convenience.
At the Y, members can work out individually or with others. You are able to design your own workouts or get help from the fitness staff and personal trainers. In the cardio room we have 16 treadmills, 5 elliptical trainers, 5 bikes, 4 stair steppers, 5 rowing machines, 7 arc trainers, and 4 magnum steppers. The weight room is made up of 28 cybex machines and a wide variety of free weights. There is also room for stretching in the weight room.
Also, in the cardio and weight rooms Y members can express themselves through movement. Exercising is a creative and trans-formative experience. As members workout, their bodies transform to match their goals. Many of our Health and Wellness staff feel privileged to help and guide our members strive for their personal bests. Many of our Y members have changed as they've met their goals. They lose weight, move on to more challenging workouts, and start coming to the YMCA more often. It's so exciting to hear their stories throughout the training process.
Through exercise and relationships the Health and Wellness Department enriches the lives of members and staff at the YMCA of Elkhart County. One of our Health and Wellness staff, Bekah, went on record and said, "I remember one member talking to me about running over a year ago. At that time I was training for a marathon. He told me that he wanted to run a marathon sometime. Over the next number of months he transformed himself into a marathon runner. He lost over 30 pounds and through lots of training, injuries, and other stresses completed the Chicago Marathon. He came back to the Y and told us all about the race experience. I've never run the Chicago marathon, but after hearing about it from this member I want to run it!"
The energy around competing is contagious. It's that type of enthusiastic energy that keeps members coming back to the Health and Wellness Department day after day and week after week. Hope to see you there this week. Join us!
